Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon In-Person

Oberlin College Libraries will celebrate Frederick Douglass’ birthday by participating in the Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon event:

  • Friday, February 13, 2026 from 12 pm to 3 pm
  • In the Learning Lab (Room 113) at Terrell Main Library
  • You can drop in for as long (or as little) as you like.

Watch this space for additional information as we gear up for this collective act of radical love for Black history!

And if you've never done any transcription before, it’s okay! No experience is necessary, and online tutorials are available to help. So are your librarians! :-)

This year, we will focus on transcribing materials from the Colored Conventions Project. This groundbreaking archive documents how nineteenth-century African Americans organized around critical issues such as voting rights, citizenship, education, labor, racial equality, and so much more.

These documents offer historical insight and a call to action in the face of today’s urgent political crises, from voter suppression to attacks on citizenship and education. Colored Conventions were spaces of collective care and resistance. By engaging these documents together, we hope to illuminate the legacy of Black organizing and contribute to the work still ahead.
